A patient story about thoughtful planning, selective treatment, and creating harmony
across a smile.

A focused refresh of the four front teeth helped create a brighter, more balanced smile.
The best cosmetic plan is not always the biggest one. Sometimes, treating only the teeth
that truly need attention can preserve healthy, stable dentistry while creating a meaningful
change.
VUE DENTAL KYLE • PATIENT STORY
She came in for one veneer—but the smile told a fuller story
This patient had received veneers on ten upper teeth from another dentist approximately 10 to 15 years
earlier. Most of those restorations were still stable. One front tooth—the upper right central incisor—had
always appeared darker because the underlying tooth had previously received root canal treatment.
Her immediate concern, however, was the matching front tooth on the left. Its veneer had come off. The
“before” photograph shows a composite veneer that Dr. Patel created as a temporary solution while we
stepped back and considered the smile as a whole.
In addition to the lost veneer and darker neighboring tooth, the gum heights around the front teeth were
uneven. Together, those details affected the balance of the smile—but they did not mean every older
veneer needed to be replaced.
Why we refreshed four teeth instead of all ten
Cosmetic dentistry should be tailored to the person, not to a preset number of teeth. After reviewing the
existing veneers, Dr. Patel recommended focusing on the four front teeth. This allowed us to address the
area people notice first: the two central incisors and the teeth beside them.
Refreshing four teeth created an opportunity to repair the lost restoration, better mask the darker root-
canal-treated tooth, and improve symmetry at the center of the smile. Just as importantly, it allowed the
stable veneers farther back in the smile to remain in place. The goal was not to make every tooth “new.” It
was to make the smile look cohesive again with a conservative, carefully selected scope of treatment.
Detailed records helped us design a cohesive result
The planning began with comprehensive records. We took a facebow record to communicate how the
teeth relate to the patient’s face and jaw, along with studio photographs that captured tooth shape, color,
gum levels, and the smile from multiple angles. Dr. Patel then studied the case and mapped out the
details before treatment began.
Because the patient had beautiful, healthy gums, conservative laser gum contouring was used to refine
the gumline around the front teeth. This helped the two central incisors appear more even in height and
gave the new restorations a more balanced frame.
Masking the darker tooth required close laboratory collaboration
A root-canal-treated tooth can present a unique esthetic challenge because its darker color may show
through a translucent restoration. To manage that carefully, Dr. Patel provided the dental laboratory with
detailed records and clear guidance about the underlying shade.
The final plan used a thoughtful combination of restoration types and materials, selected for the needs of
each tooth. The patient also played an important role by visiting the laboratory for a custom shade
appointment. That extra collaboration helped the technician study the color in person and create a natural
transition between the four refreshed teeth and the veneers that remained.
The result is a refreshed smile that still feels like her
In the final result, the darker color is masked, the front teeth appear brighter and more harmonious, and
the gumline gives the central incisors a more even appearance. Most importantly, the four new
restorations blend with the rest of her smile rather than calling attention to themselves.
This case is a helpful reminder that a smile refresh does not automatically mean replacing six, eight, or ten
teeth. When existing dental work is healthy and stable, a focused plan may be enough to address the
main concerns while preserving what is already working well. With ongoing home care and professional
maintenance, our hope is that this refresh serves her beautifully for years to come.
